Games of Thrones inspired Baby Dragon Monsters!!!

Last April before the HBO series Game of Thrones debuted we went to some GOT Food Trucks that spent a week in NYC. You can read about those adventures here, here, and here.

Well, since then in GOT-related news, we watched the show on HBO (I loved it even though I kept having to ask hubby what was going on) and hubby read the newest book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series: A Dance with Dragons. It was a big book but I remember he devoured it quickly and then spent days talking to his brother about it.

(Just last night he was reading ADWD again - "I want to reread the Davos chapters" he said, quickly adding "You haven't met him yet in the TV show." Later, when I mentioned how cold it was getting in the bedroom, he just said "Winter is Coming" followed by "The North doesn't forget." This morning when I noted it was snowing , he commented "I was never sent my white raven." Sometimes I don't know how I put up with him.)

I'll get around to reading the series one day. Right now I am too busy. But I have not forgotten about Game of Thrones, especially the final scene of the season. I just loved Dany rising out of the ashes with those cute little dragons. It was a beautiful, powerful scene, one of the best of the entire series.

Now, as you all know, some of my favorite creations (they are all my favorites, really) are the WannaBe Dragon Monsters and Baby Dragon Monsters. So inspired was I by that last scene and by the hints hubby gave me about the rest of the story that I decided to make some Baby Dragon Monsters in honor of Daenerys and her Dragons.

I got the color combinations and created them. There is black/red just like Drogon, green/bronze same as Rhaegal, and cream/gold modeled after Viserion.

July 4th 2011 Fireworks over the Hudson River - New York Skyline

What a fun July 4th weekend with Tommy, Sara, Leo and Milo! On Saturday, we went and got lunch at Cinnamon Snail and enjoyed a great sunny picnic at Esplanade Pier A Park in Hoboken then back home for a nice swim in the pool. We were most impressed with Leo's swimming.

On July 4th, we enjoyed great Vegan Rooftop BBQ at Tommy & Sara's house in East Village. The bubbles were awesome. We made it back home in time to get a nice spot close to home for the fireworks.

Here are a few photos from this year's July 4th Fireworks over the Hudson River overlooking New York Skyline. As usual, Macy's put up a really spectacular show of fireworks to celebrate the birth of our Nation.

Sorry for the lateness. I have been really busy juggling between production, shows and all that fun stuff being an designer/maker of LA MUSE KALLIOPÊ. As promised, 20% of all sales profit made by LA MUSE KALLIOPÊ until Easter ~ April 24th was donated to “Japan Earthquake Tsunami Children in Emergency Fund”. I also added to the amount to make $150.

LA MUSE KALLIOPÊ and Les Musettes will be at the 35th Annual American Crafts Festival at Lincoln Center in NYC from June 18-19, 2011.

On June 25, come find us at Not Yo' Mama's Craft Fair in Historic Downtown - Jersey City.

It will be a lot of fun. We will be rolling out tiny Make-A-Wish Wannabe Dragon Monsters (only 2 inches!) in vibrant, fun colors!!! Please come visit.

Hoboken Art & Music Festival 2011

Hoboken Arts & Music Festival May 1, 2011 was a really fun day. Lots of food, live music and whimsical"Lil' Muses".

Jillian (journalist) and Julio (cameraman) from "Hudson County TV"came and interviewed us. Towards the end of the interview, Jean's multi-lingual skills (as she, herself puts it, 5 secondary language with no primary...zzzttt...Oh-la-la...no primary...zut alors!) jinxed her and she said some mind boggling things. But here is the translation of what she wanted to say concerning the Make-A-Wish Wannabe Dragon Monsters.

You make a wish and clip a triangle on the spine of the Wannabe Dragon Monster. When the wish comes true, you clip a larger one. You keep wishing and clipping until the Wannabe Dragon Monster has a nice row of spikes down its back that you provided it with. Finally, the Wannabe Dragon Monster gets its wish too by becoming a real Dragon Monster. Pssstt...you can give your Wannabe Dragon Monster a really funky hairdo or Mohawk spike with your own creativity down it's back.

Many wishes come true to ya all!!!

St. Sebastian School Spring Craft Fair, Woodside, NY April 16th, 2011

A fun day at St. Sebastian School in Woodside, Queens. A large and great crowd; warm people. During set-up we met a five year old "J' and his mother Taina from St. Sebastian. "J" volunteered to help rearrange the Make-A-Wish Wannabe Dragon Monsters by color. Thank you "J".

A big thanks to Dolores of Marikit Designs and my fellow member from The NewNew Team for putting together a successful spring craft fair with St. Sebastian School's PTA. Thanks to everyone who came out despite rotten weather to support St. Sebastian School. Several lucky folks won big with the raffles.

Scallion Pancakes Revisited: Illustrative Edition

Hi there! Way back when, on February 9, I posted how to make Heart-Shaped Scallion Pancakes! The post was meant to be in time for Valentine's Day, hence the heart theme. But we all know that scallion pancakes are good anytime. Recently I made a batch of these delsih items. Regular style and heart-shaped. Whole wheat flour and wheat flour. All kinds are sooo good! You'll love 'em.

So, let's revisit the recipe, shall we? And this time I have photos!!!

Serving: 4
Ingredients:
3 cups all purpose flour
1 cup hot water (not boiling)
1/2 cup ice water
2 bunches fresh scallion (several stalks tied together with rubber bands make one bunch)
Table salt
Vegetable oil

Large bowl
Wooden spoon for mixing hot water with flour
Plastic wrap or damp cloth
Large skillet
Spatula
Pin roller - if you don’t have one, a clean glass bottle to flatten dough

Now, once more through the steps.

1. In a bowl, slowly add hot water in steady stream to flour while stirring with wooden spoon.
2. Continue stirring while cold water is added. Form dough into a ball.

Remember the cold water. Important!


Whole Wheat Flour Mix. Play around with the water for the right consistency.

Make it into a ball.

3. Oil inside of bowl. Set dough in it. Cover with plastic wrap or damp cloth and let rise at least 30 minutes.

Under the covers and rising!

4. While the flour rises, cut scallions into 1/8 inch thick pearls.

Remove the ends.

Choppity chop chop

Bowl full of goodness

5. On floured or thinly oiled surface flatten dough to about 1/8 inch thickness.

Rolling pin. If not a clean glass bottle will do in a pinch

6. Brush dough generously with oil. Evenly sprinkle salt. With your palms, pat the salt in. Cover with a generous layer of scallion pearls.

Olive oil. Don't be stingy but don't be too liberal. Just right.

Salt to taste. Right when you think you have enough, give another shake. Then it's OK.

Don't be afraid to load up the scallions.

7. Roll it up like a jelly roll.

Roll, roll, roll your scallions and dough!

Believe me, the secret is in the rolling. You'll notice the difference.

8. To make heart shape, bring two ends inward and downward to the center then gently flatten with palms and fingers. Make bottom of heart pointed. If the scallion pearls break through the dough, just sprinkle some flour on it and press again.

Use a smaller flattened piece of dough

Roll, roll, roll again

Bring the ends inward. Easy does it.

Take heart at the shape that is now forming.

Voila!

9. To make circular shaped scallions, cut roll into three or four pieces and set it on cut edge and press down.

Cut the roll into even parts.

Flour the ends.

Pinch down on the floured end to seal.

Now it's ready.

Using your palm - squash! Not actually squash. More of a controlled downward press.

Add more flour to seal as necessary.

Whole wheat flour mix. Can be rolled like regular flour or just folded. Depends upon the consistency you get with whole wheat flour mix.

10. Panfry at medium heat.
11. For crispy scallion pancakes, pat and press with spatula.

Use the end of the spatula to flatten. When beginning to get golden brown on bottom flip and flatten anew

Golden brown and crispy.

The hearts panfry nicely.

Nothing like a plate of scallion pancakes to say I Love You!.

The whole wheat scallion pancakes have a nice hearty taste to them. Many people prefer them to the traditional scallion pancakes.

I found the beat up orange hot dog truck. The quest is almost complete!

The switcheroo is in place. GoT Food Truck pulls up.

The crowds throng as the GoT Food Truck prepares for the feast!

Just about there. So close we can smell it. Squeak!

Top is the venison on a stick. Hubby likes food on a stick. Bottom is the Suckling Head Cheese. These main dishes are book-ended by Lemon Cakes. Oooh-la-la. Lemon Cakes. Ah, to live in Westeros and eat Lemon cakes all day and every day.

Time to say good-bye to Westeros, Winterfell, and the GoT Food Truck.

Both days were loads of fun. And good eating, too! I'll miss the food (except when I begin baking Lemon Cakes for myself...and maybe hubs). But now to get excited about Sunday nights and the Game of Thrones show!

Westeros Food Again

So it's about a quarter to 6 and Hubs and I are waiting by the orange beat-up Hot Dog Truck in the rain.I can't wait to taste tonight's scrumptious meal. There are about 25 drooling fans ahead of us. I was just contemplating what I'll go for between the menu choices, Hubs says, "I'm getting the venison and you're getting the Head cheese". Fine with me, I know we're sharing anyway.

Oh, I can't wait. So, excited. I can squeak!

Snow mixed in the rain. Ummm, that would be sleet. Kind of cold, but definitely worth the trouble.

About 50 people queuing right now.

Sorry for the delay. I've been busy feasting. As soon as the Game of Truck opened, I knew from wednesday's experience it was gonna move fast. Since we're in the first 25, we only had the time to snap a few pictures.

Hubs venison was sooooooo good. It's served on a stick, RenFaire style. Pink in the center, tender and nicely seasoned. Mine was pork head cheese. It's a nice rind of pork wrapped in skin with fat. Venison was served with barley and head cheese was farro and dried fruits. I prefer the latter because it gas a fresh citrus taste to it.

Lemon Cake is to die for. I can totally eat it every day. Gotta try the recipe.

Chef Colicchio's team did a great job again.absolutely delicious.

Hubs can't believe that they provided Lannister napkins (we kept the napkins. Of course! Squeak) from Winterfell. House Stark represent!!!

Make Your Own Wrapping Paper ~ DIY Turorial- Level of Difficulty - Easy

Ever found yourself in this dilemma? You have some really beautiful fabric scraps from previous projects. The scraps are too small even to save for a patchwork or quilt project, what do you do? Throw them out? Gut wrenching. Save them? They multiply faster than rabbits, soon you’ll find your drawers, closets full of bags and bags, boxes and boxes of them.

But, do not fear. There are many creative ways to upcycle and make good use of them.

Today, I will share with you how you too may turn these beautiful fabric scraps you’re been saving into artistic and personalized wrapping papers. Yep, no more of the same old, same old store bought wrapping papers that lack personality. Let’s get creative!

Material - pliable paper in the color of your choice*; sewing machine; thread; scissors; fabric scraps

Step 1 -
Cut paper to desired size. It needs to be big enough to wrap a gift.

Step 2 -
Cut fabric to desired shapes of in average one half inch to one inch. I like to use heart shapes and geometric shapes. Free hand shapes are very cool too.

Step 3 -
Set your machine to between 10-12 stitch length per inch.
Place paper on machine and sew a straight line through the center of cut fabric. Remember to backstitch each way.
Place and sew the fabric shapes in a harmonious yet random way. Fill the spaces without over crowding.

Ta da....Et Voila! Here’s the finished product.

Tips - You can leave the extra thread from starting and ending your stitch hanging. They add a cool effect to your finished project.

*I used artist tracing paper for this project. Wax paper from the kitchen or Parchment are great too. Tissue paper used for gift wrapping is a good choice. You can use two layers of same or different colors to add pizzazz.

Food From Westeros

"Dress warmly", Hubs said to me. "It's nice out now but it will cool down later."

This was how I found out that we would be waiting on line for small bites to eat from a food truck by Lincoln Center, NYC. "It's promotion for that show we will watch on HBO", he helpfully added. That show - Game of Thrones - takes up a lot of his time. He reread the books they are based on. He’s crazy about the show. He constantly watches videos of the show on the computer. Like, over and over and looking for new ones. He has stopped trying to explain the show. "We'll watch it together and I'll answer any and all questions then." Did I say he’s passionate about the show? Actually, Hubs was one of the few ardent/knowledgable/avid fans chosen to present a collage I put together for him for GoT marketing team last year.

I agreed to meet Hubs by Lincoln Center after he told me I could have a spicy seafood stew as prize for the adventure.

We arrived at Lincoln Center just past five. We scoped the place out to identify the likely spot of the GoT Food Truck. We walked all around the place and decided it had to be by Columbus or Broadway. We ruled out directly in front of Lincoln Center due to rush hour traffic. I pointed out the island between Columbus and Broadway as a potential spot. He wasn't too supportive due to the bus stop on the Broadway side. We waited impatiently on the steps of Lincoln Center. Looking out for the black GoT Food Truck as well as fans in the vicinity. We knew we were in the right spot when we saw groups of people consulting their cellphones constantly. "Are you following Game of Thrones on Twitter?" When he found out I wasn’t (yet) he downloaded the apps to my iPhone and soon I was checking my phone every 15 seconds for the announcement of the exact location of the GoT Food Truck. "Did you update the Twitter feed?" he asked every 30 seconds despite my updating it constantly. Our hearts were beating very fast.

Shortly before six a beat-up, orange hot dog truck parked south of the aforementioned island between Columbus and Broadway on 63rd Street. There was a small group of people waiting around there as well. "Let's go over there", I said. He poo-poo'd the idea. "That truck is probably trying to sell overflow from the GoT food truck" he retorted. He then pointed out that everyone over there was looking at their phones too, waiting for the exact location. Ha, ‘I already know that, Captain Obvious!’ I thought to myself.

The crowd grew bigger over there. He dragged me out to eat here so I dragged him across the street to the larger crowd. In front of the orange food truck some people in HBO shirts were standing around. A line started to form. I was right about the island. I should have followed my instinct and insisted we checked out the small crowd earlier. He reluctantly agreed that I had been right. We were about 40 or 50 in line. Not so bad and the GoT food truck hadn't even showed up yet.

After a few minutes the GoT truck did show up. The orange food truck pulled away. "See, the orange truck was just holding the place for the real food truck.". Hubby said as if he knew it all along.

It was chilly out but I dressed warmly enough. Thanks to Hubs' warning. The “Game of the Thrones” fans are a bunch of very friendly young urban professional, hip looking people. While queuing, we were given a GoT Menu of the Day. There’s a puzzle on the menu, said the HBO staff mysteriously. Later, the HBO staff proudly showed the fans in waiting how to fold their menus apples to apples and oranges to oranges to spell out "Lys". I don't know what that means but everyone else seemed to.

Once the truck opened up the line flowed smoothly and quickly.

So excited. Imagine a flea trying really hard to prevent itself from jumping up and down and squeaking like a mouse.

I had the Black Seafood Stew with Dragon Peppers and Hubs had Beet and Pickled Egg with Preserved Horseradish. His shellfish allergy prevented him from tasty my stew but I nibbled on his egg. Both of us had Lemon Cakes for dessert. Absolutely scrumptious. I had nice pieces of well prepared and seasoned fresh cuttle fish and shrimps in cuttle fish ink. The pickled egg sucked up beet juice nicely and was sporting a bright fuchsia red all the way to the yolk. Aaaaah...oh la la...and the infamous “Lemon Cake”. It was so delightfully delicious. Like a yellow pixie having fun under the Spring sun.Oh, and they mean business when they say "Dragon Pepper" is an ingredients in Black Seafood Stew. My mouth felt as though it was kissed by a "Fire Dragon".

Oh, I wouldn't let Hubs use the napkins they provided. They looked too good; it'll make a nice souvenir. "I don't like that House", he said. "I want to wipe my mouth with it.". Don't worry. I have both napkins. Maybe I'll frame them.

Depending on the weather and location of the truck Thursday and Friday I would like to go again. It was fun. The food was great. Really, it was. After living in France for about a decade and had some opportunities to enjoy some top notch food, I was impressed by Chef Tom Colicchio’s team. Now I am excited for the show to begin. It's almost April now but I can’t help but get excited as Hubs constantly says, "Winter is Coming".

Did I mention Hubs is completely C-R-A-Z-Y about "Game of Thrones"?

LES MUZZITS™ ORIGIN STORY

A baby Musette crept slowly from the remains of the hatched egg. The egg was in three large pieces with smaller pieces scattered not so far from it. The egg was silver and purple and shiny. Each of the smaller scattered pieces reflected a different color in the sunlight. Surrounding this egg was a field of high, green grasses with wildflowers of various colors spread intermittently throughout. All across this field other eggs were beginning to crack and hatch.

Some of these eggs were tiny, some large, some a single bright color while others were mixed with the colors of a sunset or a rainbow or the reflection of the trees glistening in the still pools. All these eggs had baby Musettes inside. A lucky egg may contain two, even three of them.

The baby Musette that came forth from the silver and purple egg began to become aware of its surroundings. It knew where it was. It remembered the stories it had been told while still in its egg.

“...Mount Helicon is a place of serene beauty and nurturing life-giving...”

“...The birthplace of the Nine Muse...”

“the different arts flourished in its fertile lands and creativity was nourished by its clear springs...”

“...one day you will inspire others as all Musettes once inspired the Nine Muse...”

The Musette’s task was clear: one day it would be ready to go off with someone as a creative companion and a personal pal. But first it would grow and learn within the confines of Mount Helicon.

In the days that passed, this baby Musette learned more about the Nine Muse and how the Musettes inspired them and asked them to help inspire everyone, to become a personal “Lil’ Muse” for all who needed one.

Between lessons the baby Musette frolicked in the fields of tall, cool grass, went swimming in the springs, and hiking up the slopes of Mount Helicon. But for all this, it still felt restless. It still felt the need to inspire. The teacher Musettes were kind and wise. They wanted each baby Musette to wait until they were ready to go out into the world and find that certain someone with whom they would connect. So, this baby Musette waited.

One day, while climbing up Mount Helicon, this baby Musette heard voices. High, cries of joy and laughter. Children’s voices! This baby Musette knew what it had to do. It looked inside itself and decided it was ready. Ready to meet others, ready to inspire, ready for that connection.

The baby Musette followed the laughter through a grove of tall trees, with golden leaves. It could hear the wind rustling, as if talking to it, nudging it forward. The trees opened up to a grassy knoll. It spied three children playing with an inflatable ball. Bouncing the ball between them, they laughed and gasped as they did all they could to not let it touch the ground.

After a while, the ball hit the ground and bounced toward the baby Musette. A small girl, with a large smile and innocent eyes, ran over to fetch it. She stopped. The baby Musette and the girl looked at each other. They smiled.

“What are you?” asked the girl.

“Your Musette” replied the baby Musette.

Out came a shriek of happiness from the girl. The other children ran over to inspect the commotion. “What is it?” one of them asked.

“A Muzzit” replied the small girl.

Before the baby Musette could say anything, it noticed the teacher Musettes in the grove of trees. They must have come looking for it. The teacher Musettes saw that a connection was made and left the girl with her Muzzit and the Muzzit with its girl.

From that day forward, Muzzits were encouraged to enter our world alongside Musettes. A Muzzit's purpose is to be a “lil' muse” for kids, to begin that connection that allows inspiration and creativity to live in a child’s mind.

LES MUSETTES™ ORIGIN STORY

The springs of Mount Helicon flow strongly, delivering crisp, clear waters into glorious pools surrounded by luscious grasses and colorful flowers. Creatures, of all sizes and shapes and forms, drank freely from these waters, traveling as far as necessary to obtain a taste. From these life-giving springs were born the ancient Nine Muse. The Nine Muse inspired the creation of the arts and literature. Poetry, music, dance, and literature flourished under the Nine Muse. Great works of art were created and imagined.

The great art masters had one of the Nine Muse close to them. But the gifts of the Nine Muse wasn't just a direct line to these artists. The inspiration of the Nine Muse overflowed and reached far beyond individuals and borders. All people and cultures were able to grab hold of these inspirations. The world flourished as did the arts. One representing the other in a continuous cycle, feeding off each other, and making each better and more fruitful. The creativity nourished and the imagination sparked by the Nine Muse became widespread. The world continued to grow. More people continued to be inspired by the Nine Muse. Alas, there were only Nine Muse and now billions of people, all searching for inspiration, for that coaxing to create something, for that need to define themselves and the world around them through words, music, and pictures.

The Nine Muse once again returned to the springs of Mount Helicon, where they were born, the originator of dreams itself. They bathed in its waters, rejuvenating themselves. They walked its shores, gazing in wonder upon the flora and fauna that inhabited this wondrous place. Their eyes turned toward small, little creatures, who played in the grasses, hid under the flowers, and swam in the waters. Different little creatures but all with their own individual charm. The Nine Muse could ascertain different family groups among them, differing colors, and patterns, and shapes. But one similarity among them held constant.

They inspired the Nine Muse.

The Nine Muse looked upon these creatures and their own imagination whirred, their dreams of inspiring all the billions of people peoples may become a realization. The Nine Muse stayed a while longer, longer than they anticipated, for this holiday at Mount Helicon. They interacted with these creatures: singing, reciting, drawing, writing, dancing, looking to the heavens for new stars, and unraveling the mysteries of this vast world. The longer the Nine Muse stayed the more of these creatures they met. The creatures seemed to be everywhere - in the treetops, frolicking in the grasses, perched upon rocks in the pools of water, along the banks of the springs - and even when out of sight their inspiration stayed with the Nine Muse. The Nine Muse were happier than they had been in a long while. Content with knowing they could receive this gift that they have long given.

The Nine Muse knew they had to leave Mount Helicon someday. They realized they had to go back to the world. One day, the Nine Muse met in one the pools and an idea came about, inspired by the creatures. What if these creatures who have so inspired the Nine Muse could find a human companion in which to inspire?

The Nine muse addressed these creatures as they gathered around one of the larger pools. The Nine Muse relayed how the creatures sparked their imaginations, how the creatures allowed the Nine Muse to realize one of their dreams: a world where everyone had their own muse. The Nine Muse asked the creatures to assist them. To go out into the world. The Nine Muse explained that they would be out in the world with them, side by side. The Nine Muse's reach would be far and wide, while the creatures, through the Nine Muse, would have an individual reach. The creatures mandate was to find or be found by that one person who needed them. The creatures, to a one, agreed, and agreed happily.

Thus were born Les Musettes or "Lil’ Muses". Your own personal muse is waiting for you. Go find yours.

Valentine Heart Shaped Scallion Pancakes

Scallion pancakes are tasty finger foods great for potluck parties. Best of all, they are easy to make and can be prepared ahead of time and reheated. This recipe I share with you is the result of years of experiment and improvement based on a classic recipe. My family and friends love them. I hope you do too.

8. To make heart shape, bring two ends inward and downward to the center then gently flatten with palms and fingers. Make bottom of heart pointed. If the scallion pearls break through the dough, just sprinkle some flour on it and press again.
9. To make circular shaped scallions, cut roll into three or four pieces and set it on cut edge and press down.
10. Panfry at medium heat.
11. For crispy scallion pancakes, pat and press with spatula.
